Andrew Wasylyk: Drift

25 March 2017 // Music

Dear Caught by the River,

Recently, I recorded a short 8-track instrumental album under my ‘Andrew Wasylyk’ alias (Ukrainian grandfather) called Themes For Buildings & Spaces, which ranges from cinematic to minimal piano and drone. It did a two week stint at an arts festival in Scotland at the end of 2016:

“Andrew Wasylyk (the alias of Scottish writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Mitchell) invites the listener to explore the city through sound. Eight selected architectural sites, or, open spaces, have inspired a series of vignettes echoing the materials, everyday use and romanticised memories of a landscape considerably changed through the decades. From the celebrated to the forgotten, the melancholic to the uplifting, the ambient to the hypnotic, Wasylyk’s soundtrack asks the nostalgist in us all to consider an alternative view of his hometown of Dundee.”

If this is of any interest to you I’ve attached a video. It features some rather handsome archive footage from the mid-50s that I sourced of Dundee Jute mill factory employees and their families letting their hair down at an annual worker’s picnic across the Firth of Tay in the Kingdom of Fife.

All the very best,

Andrew
