Caught by the River

Shadows & Reflections – Matt Sewell

23rd December 2009

In which, as the year comes to its end, our friends and collaborators look back and share their moments;

With a cracker a of a new year welcomed in at a rave in a yurt deep in Melbourne, 2009 was looking just great. Soon after me and my girlfriend set off on a 4500 mile drive from Perth to Darwin, which i can easily say was the best 3 weeks of my life. The heat and humidity was really too much for a northerner to take but that all seems like a dream now. So many memories from that trip are clear as crystal, sun bathing and watching ospreys fishing in the ocean, swimming with manta rays, behemoth black wedged tail eagles, swimming with a whale shark and then getting circled by a tiger shark, driving for a whole day and seeing only 1 car, diving at the Navy Pier in Exmouth (like diving in an aquarium), camping out in typhoons, swimming in crystal pools and waterfalls at dawn and hours upon hours of gazing at the stars.

So exactly half my year has been spent traveling and the other in Blighty and i have to say i missed it. I could not believe how green the place was, GREEN everywhere. And pubs, everywhere. Its funny the things that seem odd after 14 months away. Getting my feet back on the ground felt very odd and it took months, but being back amongst friends and family and having a comfortable place to draw was the cure that i had been longing for. Living by the river in shropshire has been fantatsic, with its kingfishers, buzzards and ravens but the sea calls and its back to Brighton with a bun in the oven and a skip in our steps. New adventures for me and Jessica i honestly cant wait for 2010.
