Caught by the River

The Hedgerow Society

from Mathew Clayton.

The Hedgerow Society is a night i have put together, with a couple of friends, that is very much inspired by Caught by the River. The first one takes place next Friday 21st Jan in a lovely venue in Brighton called the Basement. The idea is to showcase culture inspired by nature. We have got one room for showing films and another for bands and writers. Jeff kindly agreed to book the bands for us and we have got a cracking double bill of Colorama and the Diamond Family Archive. Our feature film is the Moon and the Sledgehammer, the cult documentary from 1971 about a Sussex family that live in the woods cut off from the modern world. We have also got the writer Matthew De Abaitua talking about the radical camping movement the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift and our resident DJ is the poet Brendan Cleary. We will be serving Harvey’s fine ale behind the bar. Tickets are £5 on the door and the night runs from 8pm-1am. If you come down please make sure you say hello.

The next Hedgerow Society will take place on March 25th. Our main music act is the Canadian singer-songwriter Doug Paisley, Jeff is going to do some dj’ing and our film will be Vashti Bunyan: From Here to Before, which was made by Kieran Evans (whose lovely film of Colorama’s Carwyn Ellis you may have seen on this site a few days ago).
