Caught by the River

Shadows & Reflections – Brian David Stevens

In which, as the year comes to its end, our friends and collaborators look back and share their moments:

They That Are Left

Ten years ago I started a body of work photographing war veterans, I wanted the photographs to be just faces, no stories, no uniforms, no trappings of rank, no awards for bravery.
Just faces.

This November I finished it.

The project had several self imposed rules. The pictures had to be taken on Armistice Sunday. The pictures should be uniform and democratic and the soldiers should be unknown.

Looking back over ten years work brings up many emotions but sadness comes first, probably a large number of the subjects are now dead, but as Laurence Binyon wrote in ‘The Fallen’

“…They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them…”
