Robert Macfarlane has helmed the latest issue of online literary magazine Five Dials. Published by Penguin, issue no.36 is titled Landmarkings, and it’s no coincidence that Rob’s latest book – the follow-up to his 2012 breakthrough The Old Ways – is called Landmarks.

This new issue, guest-edited by Robert along with Simon Prosser, from one of London’s oldest publishing houses, Hamish Hamilton, and features a previously unpublished piece by the late, great, patron saint of this parish, Roger Deakin, unpublished work by the legendary Scottish novelist and poet Nan Shepherd as well as some superb illustrations by Stanley Donwood, like the ones used to illustrate this post.

There are also some excellently unusual film-only images by David Quentin, which he self-styles as “aerial geology.” These come highly recommended by Robert Macfarlane, with whom David has also collaborated with in the past (notably on his first book). The whole mag is definitely worth your time – enjoy!
