Caught by the River

Sleep Start: a poem by Jelle Cauwenberghs

Jelle Cauwenberghs | 9th March 2021

Embedded in stone,
I watch my bones fold
And unfold.

Idle lashes, striations —

My heart stops,
Stunned by the sheer
Drop —
The sudden jolt of my body
In the cold concavity.

I stumble like a deer
Covered in the grey ash of dawn.
In my dream I was airborne

It was morning
And my blood was made of clouds,
Endlessly flowing over the sea.
