The Ritual Year – Dave Pearson’s Calendar Customs

9th November 2022

Our excellent friends at Folklore Tapes have just launched a Kickstarter campaign for their next publication, bringing together the late artist Dave Pearson’s defining artwork and research into English calendar customs.

Dave Pearson (1937-2008) explored the rich seam of English Calendar Customs for a period of nine years in the 1970s and 80s. Pearson’s work during this period mined incredibly detailed explorations into a staggering wealth of customs from the 19th and 20th century, found across 14 notebooks and hundreds of large and small scale works.

Alongside a hardback book, which will collect Pearson’s output across the mediums of etchings, pastels, relief, paint and ink, a new animation has been created by Chinese artist Kain Leo. This animation playfully collages Pearson’s Calendar Customs work into a lucid visionary dreamscape. The score to the film was recorded by The Root Folk Band in an old telephone repeater station high up on Shap Fell in the Lake District. The score will be pressed onto a double-sided seven inch record, included in the back of the book. The animation and score will also be included as a downloadable bookmark. The other unique rewards available offer the opportunity to own original artworks by Pearson, alongside t-shirts, postcard sets and posters.
