Caught by the River

Selected by Stone Club: A Collection of Words from the Archive (Vol. 3)

26th April 2023

Unveiling our latest print offering: a bumper edition of our Collection of Words from the Archive zine, guest-edited by Lally MacBeth and Matthew Shaw of Stone Club.

‘When Caught by the River came to us and asked if we’d like to rummage through their archives we couldn’t think of anything better’ they write in their introduction. ‘We brewed a pot of coffee, shuffled some biscuits onto a plate and got stuck in. And here you have it: from Kernow to Cymru, we present to you our favourite pilgrimages through Megalithic Britain. There are of course stones, stones and more stones; there are carved stones, bouncy stones and ringing stones. Explorations of the ancient landscape are nothing without considerations around the ways in which we as humans mark place, so we’ll also take a wander through the making of place through language and the moving and meandering of boundaries. The portal is open, follow us in.’

Designed by Lily Weinbrand, A Collection of Words from the Archive Vol. 3 features contributions from Luke Turner, Stewart Lee, Robin Turner & Jeremy Deller, Tim Dee, Benjamin Myers, Elizabeth Wainwright, Nina Lyon, Tom Cox and Róisín Á Costello — on subjects as diverse as bouncy castles, green cathedrals, seaweed, and the surrealist painter, poet and author Ithell Colquhoun.

Ink hitting paper as we speak, this zine is being printed in limited quantities, primarily as a perk for Middler and Lunker-tier Caught by the River Steady subscribers. Launched in 2021, our subscription scheme has enabled us to start paying small regular fees for contributions to the site.

Founded by artists Lally MacBeth & Matthew Shaw in 2021, Stone Club was set up as a place for stone enthusiasts to congregate, to muse and most importantly to stomp to stones.
