Caught by the River

A Hive of Activity

1st December 2023

Formerly the award-winning centrepiece of his 2015 Milan Expo pavilion, and subsequently a fixture at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Wolfgang Buttress’s installation The Hive has been given an audiovisual shakeup for the winter season.

Towering 17 metres high and twisting out of the ground in a shape suggestive of a swarm of bees, this magnificent, ever-changing space is a visual symbol of the pollinators’ role in feeding humanity and the challenges bees face today.

New for winter 2023, Wolfgang and team have arranged and installed a series of ground uplighters in the grassy bank which surrounds The Hive. The lights have been programmed to respond to the live soundscape from the sculpture, in this case a reimagining of the song ‘Blue Lullaby’ by BE. Get a taste below.

The Hive’s original soundtrack, ONE by BE (and bonus release ONE PLUS, featuring the track ‘Blue Lullaby’) are available on our Rivertones label. And as luck would have it, for Bandcamp Friday today, we have reduced most of our vinyl releases to £15.00 — take a look here!
