What Bird is That? — Terns

18th May 2025

Made in collaboration with Sussex Wildlife Trust and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, the latest of Will Rose’s excellent What Bird is That? animations focuses on the nature reserve’s breeding terns.

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is famous for its breeding Little Terns, Sandwich Terns and Common Terns. Want to learn more about what makes them so special? What is a tern? How do you identify one? Why do they fly all the way from Africa to Rye Harbour? Did you know the colour of their bill really helps tell them apart?

If you take a trip to Rye and visit the Discovery centre, you can also watch this film on the big screen.

This film was commissioned by Friends of Rye Harbour. The Friends help support the work of the wildlife trust at Rye Harbour. If you’d like to join the Friends you can find out more here.
