William Arnold’s project documenting the Isle of Mull’s BT phoneboxes is now available in book form.
William writes:
‘I’m not that into telephone boxes, I just want the phone to work.
In August of 2023, I travelled to the Isle of Mull to photograph on Polaroid film and attempt to make calls from all 21 remaining BT telephone kiosks on the island. I found only 5 to be in full working order.
This small book contains those photographs, an essay In Defence of Public Telephony and vital information about the kiosks.
As of 2025 BT are currently engaged in a mass eradication programme of the UK’s remaining payphones. If it is used 52 times OFCOM rules that the line remains connected.
With thanks to Rhona Dougall and Nina Pope and An Tobar, Tobermory for their support in the making of this work.’
