Submission Reminder: An Antidote to Indifference – Kernow Special

13th August 2025

A reminder that we are currently seeking submissions to a special edition of our irregular print zine An Antidote to Indifference, dedicated entirely to the count(r)y of Cornwall. Submissions close on 1st September 2025.

The brief: We are looking for pieces which explore and celebrate the distinct cultural identity of Cornwall. What does it mean to be Cornish? What can we glean from the landscape / art / culture / music / language / flora & fauna of Cornwall?

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to write about pilchards, piskies, or pasties? Perhaps the Rivers Tamar, Fowey, Helford or Fal tug on your heartstrings? Perhaps you have had a fantastical vision of Saint Piran, frequently dream of choughs, or have been on the sharp end of the housing crisis? Perhaps you’d like to share your collection of Cornish postcards, your love of Brenda Wootton or a cautionary tale about mine shafts? Or perhaps you’d like to survey wildflowers in your Cornish garden, or pebbles on your favourite Cornish beach?

Essay-style pieces should be roughly 1000-1500 words in length, though visual submissions, poems and so on will also be considered. A fee will be paid for all contributions printed in the zine.

Contributions from anyone and everyone are welcome, with no previous publishing experience necessary. We would particularly like to encourage submissions from writers and artists from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in publishing, including people of colour, LGBTQIA+ people, people with a disability, and people from working-class backgrounds, as well as people born or living in Cornwall.

Please send submissions to submissions@caughtbytheriver.net by 1st September 2025, with KERNOW ANTIDOTE clearly displayed in the subject line.
