Like a Snow Hill in the Air

24th July 2026

Like a Snow Hill in the Air, a new photo-and-music project by Carl Bigmore, is now available to preorder from Another Place Press.

The artist writes: ‘Like a Snow Hill in the Air is about whales, or more the stories we tell ourselves about whales.

The whale is sacred, the whale is spiritual. The whale is many things but also unknowable. In this book I have made images that speak to ideas I have of the whale and the reverence I hold for it. There are references to Moby Dick, to whale strandings, to hidden depths, deep time and the evolution of species; a land-dwelling creature that became the whale. But there are also images that feel haunted by the idea of the whale and all its secrecy; “one grand hooded phantom, like a snow hill in the air”.’

Accompanying the photobook is a 30 minute sound piece which mixes musical instrumentation, field recordings and spoken word samples all composed and performed by Carl. The music and images intersect and overlap to invite a deeper narrative experience. Listen to a sample of the sound piece here:
