‘Cururu’ by Merlyn Driver. Drawn from a collaboration with Brazilian biologist Mariana Retuci Pontes and her recordings of amphibians in the Atlantic Forest, “The soundscape is a single unedited recording, capturing the remarkable calls of several different species” says Merlyn. “‘Cururu’ is the indigenous name for toads of the genus Rhinella, such as Rhinella icterica.”

Taken from the upcoming debut solo album It Was Also Sometimes Daylight, out in October. Recorded between London and a converted barn in rural Finland, the record is a raw, intimate meditation on memory, childhood, and the natural world, rooted in Merlyn’s upbringing on an off-grid smallholding in Orkney — and featuring contributions from several musicians and friends, as well as curlews, greenshank, blackbirds, wood sandpipers, barnacle geese, and multiple species of frogs and toads.
