You can now listen back to talks and performances from our May event at Elmley Nature Reserve, thanks to Elmley’s newly launched Sound Space.

Hear Elmley’s Gareth Fulton sit down with Nicola Chester and Tallulah Brennan to discuss all things farming & ecology; Emma Warren and Mathew Clayton consider our need for collective community space and action in a time of tech billionaires; Rob St John and Tallulah discuss Rob’s recent project Are You Lost?, and what happens when artists connect with community in a meaningful way; Lamine — plant shop owner, and one half of plant and fungi biosonification duo Plants Can Dance — demonstrate how music can be made from plants’ biorhythms, using specimens collected from the Elmley site: and Horatio Clare and Tallulah discuss human and humane approaches to people caught up in the ‘small boats’ crisis.

You can additionally listen to a roundtable conversation between writers Brian Dillon, Sue Stuart-Smith and Noreen Masud (chaired by Tom Morton), the result of a creative writing retreat last winter, as they spend time on the reserve and reflect on the landscape, geography and location of Elmley not only as something exterior but also on the interior experience of inhabiting the marshland.

Elmley are also soon to add recordings from their new hydrophones and sound recorders to the Sound Space, so listeners can immerse themselves in the soundtrack of the landscape through real-life audio recordings of birdsong, wings overhead and wind in the grasses.
