We were introduced to photographer Jess Bootes at our weekend event on the Isle of Sheppey earlier this year. As well as her fantastic photos of the Elmley event, we were struck by Jess’s ongoing personal project ‘Sceapig Island’, which gives intimate insight into Sheppey life. She has kindly allowed us to share some photos from the project here.

‘‘Sceapig Island’ is a documentary series exploring the community and landscape of the Isle of Sheppey, an island known historically for its sheep. Extending off of the Southeast coast, and neighbouring the Thames Estuary, this 35 square mile island is attached by two bridges. Rich with history and home to over 10 caravan/camping sites, the Island’s reputation of poverty and crime has gained it a negative reputation with many people from the mainland. The Isle of Sheppey is my hometown, the photographs are informed by my personal experience, as well as extensive research into the island’s history. The images explore a sense of place, our connection to home and how geography influences our emotions and behaviour.’
