Caught by the River

Holdfast

4th November 2026

Recently exhibited at Newlyn Art Gallery, Holdfast is an ongoing project by Teän Roberts — an imaginative photographic investigation into the folk-history of kelping in the Isles of Scilly.

All that is left of this 150-year-long subsistence practice – of collecting, drying and burning seaweed for glass making – are the stone-lined pits where the kelp was burned.

Teän has kindly allowed us to share some images from the project.
