Caught by the River

~ Flow

27th May 2012

Dear Jeff,

We’re working on a new project with Chris Watson, who thought you might be interested to know what we’re up to.

We’ve commissioned Chris to make a new piece of work in response to ~Flow, a collaboration between Owl Project and Ed Carter. ~Flow is a tidemill, a floating building that is residing in Newcastle on the River Tyne from March to September 2012, that generates its own power using a tidal water wheel. The building houses electro-acoustic musical machinery and instruments that respond to the constantly changing environment of the river, generating sound and data. ~Flow is part of ‘Artists taking the lead’, one of twelve extraordinary public art commissions funded by the Arts Council for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. You can find more information at flowmill.org.

Chris is creating a new sound work based on field recordings from the sources of the North and South Tyne, along the river, until it meets the sea. Extracts of these recordings are being made available online, here. and Chris’s commission will culminate in a performance at Sage Gateshead on 5th September when he’ll be presented an ambisonic mix of these field recordings.

Do let me know if you’d like any more information about the project, it’d be great to hear your thoughts about it.

Thanks
Beth
