Our friends and publishers par excellence Little Toller are crowdfunding to support the publication of GOING TO GROUND — a collection of place and nature writing celebrating over 10 years of their online journal The Clearing.
The Clearing was started in 2013 by a group of writers and poets who were studying at Exeter University, with the aim of offering a dedicated space to explore and celebrate landscapes, finding distinctive, sometimes startling voices and visions of places, be they rural, urban, suburban, modern, prehistoric, industrial or post-industrial, fantastical or natural.
Since then, The Clearing has grown an audience around the world, supported writing projects across the UK and helped emerging writers at the early stages of their publishing journey. Along the way, the rotating editors of The Clearing have collaborated with hundreds of writers and published over 400 essays, poems, occasional podcasts, interviews and films, creating a rich archive of writing and thinking about our world.
Little Toller would like to celebrate The Clearing by publishing a book that draws from this body of work, featuring essays and poetry from a wide range of established and emerging writers across they UK and further afield. Contributors include Kerri ní Dochartaigh, Tim Dee, Nancy Campbell, Amina Khan, Ann Lingard, Tim Hannigan, Martin Maudsley, Alex Woodcock, Louisa Adjoa Parker, Eleanor Anstruther, Kathleen Jamie, Nic Wilson, JC Niala, Elspeth Wilson, Baz Nichols, Chris Baker, Alex Diggins, David Higgins, David Bradford, Raine Geoghegan, Jack Thacker, Graham Mort, Susannah Walker, Jane Hughes, Mary Malyon, Jen Jones & Meriel Harrison.
Having already reached their initial target, there’s a new stretch target of £8000, which will allow the printing of more copies of the book, rewards for the contributors, and help the initiation of The Clearing Prize, an annual award for essays on nature and place.
